![]() Tannenberg was a decisive defensive battle in that it saved East Prussia from invasion. Both sides were aware that much en clair messaging was relatively safe. In any case, the air was alive with radio communications, and it required large numbers of trained enemy operators, fully equipped for interception work, to take full advantage. The Russian problem was lack of codebooks and trained personnel. The Germans also sent many uncoded messages during the campaign. The use of uncoded radio signals was not due to incompetence. In this respect, it represented a mix of 18th- and 20th-century technology. Beyond railhead, it moved at the speed of marching men and horse-drawn transport. The German Army, though more advanced than the Russian, was itself a hybrid. The technical arms were especially good: the Russian artillery was numerous and well-served, and there were no less than 244 military aircraft available at the outbreak of war. Part of the way through its modernisation programme, the Russian Army was a mix of tradition and modernity. ![]() ![]() The Russian ‘steamroller’ was not a uniformly primitive military machine. In consequence, the decisive battle of the war of movement in East Prussia was fought two weeks before that in the West (the Battle of the Marne). In fact, the Russians mobilised rapidly and launched an immediate offensive to relieve the pressure on their French allies in the West. German plans assumed slow Russian mobilisation. A trench is needed as the area is very open and small. When capturing: Use the houses as cover.Do not hide behind the houses, as you are vulnerable to enemy fire from behind. You must be precise, as the landscape is very hilly. If you have a grenade, try using it if the enemy is in a trench. Although the forest provides excellent cover for enemy snipers and riflemen, it can also be used to ambush unsuspecting enemies. When defending: Use the forest to your advantage.Since the area is quite heavily forested, hiding behind trees is the best way to advance without alerting the enemy. When capturing: Make use of the forest trees to act as cover from enemy fire.Since Tannenberg's map consists of three differently-built areas, different playstyles will be needed to conquer/defend each area. Each area will yield 1 point for every second that it is held for. The objective of this battle is to capture and hold three strategic areas, labelled A, B and C. Tannenberg is unique, being played on Domination gamemode. This map was added in the v0.8 Alpha update. It is one of three maps to take place in 1914, the other being the Battle of Le Cateau (1914) and the First Battle of the Marne (1914). The battle takes place in Tannenberg, East Prussia, (present-day Poland). This map introduces the Domination gamemode, as well as Russia. In real life, Germany won and opened up the Eastern Front of WW1. The battle was fought from the 23 to the 30 of August 1914. The Battle of Tannenberg was a major battle fought between Germany on the Central Powers and Russia on the Entente Powers. ![]()
